What the research actually says about video speed and comprehension

The most-cited recent study on this question comes from UCLA psychologist Dillon Murphy and colleagues, published in 2022 in Applied Cognitive Psychology under the title "Learning in double time: The effect of lecture video speed on immediate and delayed comprehension." Across a series of experiments with 231 UCLA undergraduates who watched 13-to-15-minute recorded lectures, the researchers found minimal cost to comprehension at 1.5x and 2x speed compared with normal speed, whether tested immediately or after a one-week delay — but performance did decline once speed exceeded 2x.

Their practical takeaway, in Murphy's own words, was that students "shouldn't exceed double the normal playback speed" if they want to preserve comprehension. That finding isn't universal, though. A separate randomized trial published in 2017 in the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine tested 54 medical students watching unfamiliar procedural training videos at 1.5x versus normal speed, and found accelerated playback produced measurably worse quiz scores on one video and a roughly one-letter-grade equivalent drop on another.

The likely explanation for the gap: the UCLA study used lecture-style spoken content most students could already partly follow, while the medical-training study used dense, unfamiliar technical material where every visual and verbal detail mattered. The practical rule that falls out of both studies together is that speed tolerance depends on how new and dense the material is, not a single universal safe number — 1.5x-2x is well-supported for review material or lectures in a subject you already have some footing in, while brand-new technical or highly detailed content is safer closer to 1x-1.25x.

Why speeding up audio doesn't turn your voice into a chipmunk
