Fantasy Scoring: Why Reception Value and Touchdown Points Change Everything
Fantasy football scoring looks standardized at a glance, a point per so many yards, six points for most touchdowns, but two settings genuinely divide leagues: how much a reception is worth and how much a passing touchdown is worth. Standard scoring gives a catch no points at all; half-PPR adds 0.5 per reception; full PPR adds a full point. That gap alone can shift a receiver's weekly total by eight points or more, enough to flip a start-sit decision or reorder draft rankings entirely.
The passing touchdown setting matters just as much for quarterbacks. Four points per passing score is the default on ESPN, Yahoo, and NFL.com, but some leagues award six to match rushing and receiving touchdowns. Over a full season that difference can add 70 points to a quarterback who throws 35 touchdowns, which is exactly why 6-point leagues push quarterbacks higher on draft boards. Checking your league's actual scoring settings page before trusting any calculated total is worth the two minutes it takes.
Defense Scoring and Superflex: Formats Most Fantasy Calculators Skip
Fantasy defense and special teams (DST) scoring runs on a completely different point structure than offensive players, and it's the format most generic scoring guides skip entirely. On ESPN's default settings, a defense earns 1 point per sack, 2 points per interception, 2 points per fumble recovery, 2 points per safety, and 6 points for any defensive or special-teams touchdown. Points allowed then swings the total up or down on a sliding scale: a shutout is worth 10 points, 1-6 points allowed is worth 7, 7-13 is worth 4, 14-20 is worth 1, 21-27 is worth 0, 28-34 is worth -1, and 35 or more allowed costs -4. A defense that forces three turnovers and returns one for a touchdown but gives up 24 points still nets a positive score once the turnover and touchdown points are added in.
Superflex leagues change the math on the offensive side instead. Adding a second flex slot that can be filled with a quarterback effectively doubles the number of startable quarterbacks a 12-team league needs, from 12 to as many as 24, which pushes quarterback scarcity past that of any other position. A QB1 who might go in the third round of a standard draft routinely goes in the first round of a superflex draft, because the calculator's raw point total doesn't capture how much harder replacement-level quarterback production is to find once every team needs two.
Sportsbook Odds, the Vig, and Finding Value in Three-Way Markets
Every two-way betting line, a moneyline, a point spread, or an over/under, is priced so that both sides' implied probabilities add up to more than 100%. That excess is the vig, also called the juice or the overround, and it's how a sportsbook builds in a profit regardless of which side wins. On a standard -110/-110 line, each side implies 52.38%, for a total of 104.76% and a 4.76% margin baked into the price.
Removing that margin mathematically, a process called de-vigging, produces the fair odds and true probability behind the posted price. It's a useful way to compare how much different books are charging on the same market, or to see how a line's implied probability compares with your own read on a game. It isn't a prediction of the outcome; it only describes how a specific book priced a specific market once its built-in margin is stripped back out.
The vig calculation described above works for a two-way market, but a soccer match with a draw, or any market with three or more outcomes, needs an extra step. Convert every outcome's odds to implied probability the same way, but sum all three instead of two. That sum will land well above 100%, often 106-108% on a competitively priced match, since the book applies its margin across three prices instead of two. Dividing each individual probability by that total normalizes the three outcomes back down to exactly 100%, giving the fair, no-vig probability for the win, the draw, and the loss simultaneously.
Fair odds are also the reference point bettors use to look for positive expected value, not just a way to compare sportsbooks. If your own estimate of a team's win probability is meaningfully higher than the no-vig probability a book's line implies, the bet may carry positive expected value at that price. That comparison is only as good as the probability estimate feeding it though; a no-vig calculator strips out the book's margin, it doesn't supply a forecast, so treating its output as an edge without an independently reasoned probability is how bettors talk themselves into bad bets.

PPR stands for points per reception. Standard scoring awards nothing for a catch by itself, half-PPR awards 0.5 points per reception, and full PPR awards a full point per reception. Should passing touchdowns be worth 4 or 6 points in fantasy football?
