How the Quilt Backing Calculator Formula Works

Start by adding overhang to both quilt dimensions: a margin of extra fabric on every side beyond the quilt top itself. That margin exists because a longarm machine's rollers and clamps need something to grip along the edges, and because the backing needs trimming allowance once quilting is done and the top has been squared up. Four inches per side, eight inches total added to width and to length, is the figure most longarm quilters ask for, though some request five or six.

Once the backing's full width is known, divide it by how much usable fabric width you actually have. Standard quilting cotton is cut and sold at 42 to 44 inches, but the selvages, those tightly-woven edges with the printer's color dots, have to come off, and a little more is lost squaring the raw edges straight, so 40 inches is the realistic usable figure.

If the backing width fits within that, one length of fabric covers it with no seam.

If it doesn't, the calculator rounds up to the next whole panel and multiplies that panel count by the backing length to find total inches needed, then converts to yards and rounds up to the nearest quarter yard, since fabric is cut off the bolt in quarter-yard increments and rounding down would leave a pieced backing physically short.

Worked example

A Real Worked Example

A 58 by 66 inch quilt top, a common lap-quilt size, needs 4 inches of overhang added to every side, bringing the backing itself to 66 by 74 inches. That 66 inch width doesn't fit within one 40 inch usable width of standard quilting cotton, so the backing needs 2 panels pieced together: 66 ÷ 40 comes out to 1.65, which rounds up to 2, since a fraction of a panel still means buying and cutting a full extra width.

Multiply 2 panels by the 74 inch backing length for 148 total inches, divide by 36 for 4.11 yards, then round up to the nearest quarter yard, since fabric is sold in quarter-yard cuts, for 4.25 yards. At $11 a yard that's $46.75.

Switch the fabric width input to 108 and the same quilt needs only one seamless panel, since 66 inches fits well within 108, cutting the yardage down to just over 2 yards of the length measurement, though wide backing typically costs more per yard than standard cotton.

Whether a backing needs piecing comes down to one comparison: the backing's total width, quilt width plus overhang on both sides, against how much usable fabric width is available. Standard quilting cotton runs 40 inches usable once the selvages are trimmed, so any backing wider than that needs at least two panels sewn together, and a wide quilt can easily need three.

Piecing a Backing: Seam Allowance and Where to Put the Seam
