How the Half Birthday Calculator Formula Works
A half birthday is the day about six months from your birthday. The simple rule is to add six months to your birth date and keep the day of the month, so a birthday of February 15 gives a half birthday of August 15, and a birthday of October 26 gives April 26.
Some months are shorter than others, which is where the rule needs care. Six months after August 31 would be February 31, which does not exist, so the half birthday falls on the last day of February, the 28th in a common year and the 29th in a leap year. In the same way December 31 gives June 30, and March 31 gives September 30.
Wikipedia notes that adding six months is inexact, because months differ in length, and a more precise method adds half a year of days, 182.5 in a common year. The two methods differ by a few days at most, and the calculator uses the calendar six-month rule, which is what most people mean. It also gives the days to go, the next birthday and the age you will be on the half birthday, which is your birthday age plus a half.
half birthday = birth date + 6 months (same day of the month, or the last day of a shorter month); age at half birthday = birthday age + 0.5- date of birthdateThe day you were born.

A Real Worked Example
Someone was born on August 31, 1995 and you are counting from October 6, 2026. Six months after August 31 would be February 31, which does not exist, so the half birthday is the last day of February.
The half birthday in 2026 was February 28, already passed, so the next is February 28, 2027, 145 days away. They will be 31.5 years old. Their next full birthday is August 31, 2027, and they are 373 months old now.
A birthday on February 15
For a birthday of February 15, 1990, add six months to get August 15. The half birthday this calendar year was August 15, 2026, already passed, so the next is August 15, 2027.
That is 313 days away, and the age that day is 37.5. The next birthday is February 15, 2027, 132 days away.
A birthday on January 2
A birthday of January 2, 1988 gives a half birthday of July 2, which exists every year. The next is July 2, 2027, 269 days away, at the age of 39.5.
The next birthday is January 2, 2027, 88 days away.
A leap day birthday: February 29
A person born on February 29, 2000 has a half birthday of August 29, which exists every year. The next is August 29, 2027, 327 days away, at the age of 27.5.
In common years the full birthday is counted as February 28, as Wikipedia notes people usually do, so the next birthday is February 28, 2027.
December 31: June 30
A birthday of December 31, 1992 gives June 31, which does not exist, so the half birthday is June 30. Counting from June 30, 2026, the half birthday is today, zero days away, at the age of 33.5.
The next birthday, December 31, 2026, is 184 days away.
A birthday on October 26
A birthday of October 26, 2001 gives a half birthday of April 26. The next, after October 6, 2026, is April 26, 2027, 202 days away, at the age of 25.5.
The next birthday, October 26, 2026, is only 20 days away.
March 31: September 30
A birthday of March 31, 1999 gives September 31, which does not exist, so the half birthday is September 30. Counting from September 30, 2026, it is today, zero days away, at the age of 27.5.
The next birthday, March 31, 2027, is 182 days away.
What Else to Know
What a Half Birthday Is
Wikipedia defines a half-birthday as a day approximately six months before or after the anniversary of a person's birth. It is mostly a fun milestone, and it has practical uses: people mark it when their birthday falls on a major holiday that might overshadow it, and students whose birthdays fall outside the school year use it to celebrate with classmates.

The calculator takes a date of birth and a count-from date, and returns the next half birthday, the number of days to go, the next full birthday and the age you will be.

It is a calendar calculation, and it works for anyone, a baby at six months or an adult at 40.5.
The Six-Month Rule
The simple rule adds six months to the birth date and keeps the day of the month. February 15 becomes August 15, October 26 becomes April 26, and January 2 becomes July 2. For birthdays in the first half of the year, the half birthday falls in the second half, and the reverse.

The month-by-month table lists the half birthday for the first, the fifteenth and the last day of every month.
This is the rule the calculator uses, and the one most people have in mind.
Month Ends and Leap Days
Months differ in length, so six months later does not always exist. August 31 would land on February 31, December 31 on June 31, March 31 on September 31. In those cases the half birthday falls on the last valid day of the month, which Omni Calculator describes as February 28, or February 29 in a leap year.

A February 29 birthday has a half birthday of August 29, which always exists. For the full birthday, Wikipedia says leap day babies usually celebrate on February 28 in common years, and sometimes March 1. The calculator uses February 28.

The clamping table lists the cases.
Six Months or 182.5 Days?
Wikipedia notes the simple method of adding six months is inexact, because months have different lengths and years can be leap years. A more precise approach adds half a year of days, 182.5 days in a common year, or 183 in a leap year.

The two methods rarely differ by more than a day or two, and the method table compares them for several birthdays. The six-month rule is what most calculators and most people use, so that is what this calculator does.
If you want the day-count version, add 182 or 183 days to your birthday.
Age and Days to Go
On a half birthday, you are your birthday age plus a half. Someone who turned 31 on August 31 is 31.5 on the half birthday, which is 378 months old. The age table lists common ages.

The days to go are counted from the count-from date, so enter today's date to see how long you have to wait. If today is your half birthday it shows zero.

The calculator also shows your age now in whole months, and the half birthday for the current calendar year even if it has passed.
Celebrating a Half Birthday
There is no rule about how to mark a half birthday. Some families do a small celebration for a baby at six months, and some people use it as a second chance when the real birthday is crowded out by a holiday. Students may celebrate it at school when their birthday falls in the summer.
The calculator gives the date and the age. What you do with it is up to you.
For related date sums, see the age calculator.
Limits of the Calculator
The calculator assumes the Gregorian calendar and uses the date of birth you enter. It does not account for time zones or the exact hour of birth, and it does not use the 182.5 day method. If you count from a date before your birth date, it shows an error.

The results are dates and ages for fun and planning, not legal ages. For legal purposes, rely on official records.
