Cattle Gestation Calculator
Cattle gestation calculator turns a breeding date into a cow calving date and window, or works backward from a calving date. Days pregnant too.

How the Cattle Gestation Calculator Formula Works
Gestation is counted from the breeding date to the day the calf is born. For cattle the common figure is about 283 days, with 279 to 287 days as the usual range, so the calving date is simply the breeding date plus 283 days. To plan a calving season, run it backwards: subtract 283 days from the date you want calving to begin.
Because cows do not calve on a schedule, the calculator also shows a window of a few days on either side. The default of four days covers 279 to 287 days around the 283 day average, and you can widen it. If you give an as-of date, it counts the days from breeding to that date to show how far along the pregnancy is, how many months that is, and how many days remain.
Breed, the sex of the calf, the age of the cow and the season each shift gestation by a day or two, so treat the answer as a planning window, not an appointment.
calving date = breeding date + gestation days (283); breeding date = calving date − gestation days; window = calving date +/- window days- breeding datedateThe day of natural service, artificial insemination or embryo transfer.

A Real Worked Example
A cow was bred on March 1, 2026 and you use the standard 283 days. The expected calving date is December 9, 2026.
With a four day window on either side, calving is likely between December 5 and December 13. Counting to August 1, 2026, she is 153 days pregnant, which is 5.0 months, with 130 days to go.
Working backwards from March 15, 2027
Choose the calving date mode and enter March 15, 2027. Subtracting 283 days gives a breeding date of June 5, 2026.
The window runs from March 11 to March 19, 2027. On October 6, 2026, a cow bred that day would be 123 days pregnant (4.0 months), with 160 days left.
A short gestation of 279 days
For a cow bred on May 10, 2026, set the gestation to 279 days, the low end of the common 279 to 287 day range. The expected date is February 13, 2027.
Counted to October 1, 2026 she is 144 days pregnant, or 4.7 months, with 135 days to go.
A long gestation of 286 days
Set the gestation to 286 days for a cow bred on July 4, 2026. The expected calving date is April 16, 2027, with a window from April 12 to April 20.
Counted to January 1, 2027 she is 181 days pregnant, which is 5.9 months, with 105 days left.
A 284 day herd average
A herd with an average gestation of 284 days and a cow bred on June 15, 2026 is expected to calve on March 26, 2027, with a window of March 22 to 30.
Counted to December 1, 2026 she is 169 days pregnant, 5.6 months, with 115 days remaining.
Zero window, 283 days from February 1
Set the window to zero and breed on February 1, 2026. The expected date is November 11, 2026, and the window starts and ends on the same day.
With the as-of date equal to the breeding date, the cow is zero days pregnant with 283 days to go.
What Else to Know
How the Cattle Gestation Calculator Works
The calculator does one thing: it adds the length of gestation to a breeding date. Beef Improvement Federation defines gestation as the days between the breeding date and the calving date, and that is the number the calculator uses.

For cattle the usual figure is about 283 days. It also works backwards. Enter the calving date you want and it subtracts the gestation length to show the breeding date. That makes it a planning tool for a calving season as well as a due date tool.

It returns a window as well as a date. A single date looks precise but is not, since cows calve across a span of days.
How Long Is Cattle Gestation?
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln says gestation length ranges from 279 to 287 days and that 283 days would be common for most breeds. That works out to about nine months, or a little over nine and a quarter.

Other studies give slightly different averages. A 2024 study summarised by Oklahoma State University Extension found 280.2 days on average, with calvings from 253 to 300 days. The 283 day figure is a convention that works well as a starting point.
The factors table lists what the loaded sources report, so you can decide whether to change the default for your own herd.
What Changes Gestation Length
Breed, the sex of the calf, the age of the cow and the season each move gestation by a few days. Beef Improvement Federation reports that male calves often lengthen gestation, by 1.5 days in Simmental and 1.2 in Angus, and that mature Simmental cows carried calves 1.9 days longer than heifers.

Breed averages from the same source are 284.3 days for Simmental and 278.6 for Angus. Oklahoma State summarised bull calves at 280.8 days against 279.6 for heifer calves, and fall calvers at 279.1 days against 281.1 for spring calvers.
Because you cannot know the sex of a calf in advance, these effects shift the window rather than the date. The gestation box lets you apply your own herd average.
Using the Calving Window
The window is the span of days around the due date when a normal calving is likely. The default is four days either side, which covers 279 to 287 days around 283. You can set it from 0 to 30 days.

Start checking cows at the earliest date, not the due date. The window table shows how the span changes with the setting. A wider window is useful when the breeding date is uncertain, for example when a cow ran with a bull.
The calculator cannot tell you when a particular cow will calve, and it does not assess health. Ask a veterinarian about a cow with any concern.
Planning a Calving Season
To calve in a given month, subtract 283 days from the date calving should start. For calving to start on March 1, 2027, breeding starts around May 22, 2026. The planning table lists the first of every month.

Postpartum timing matters for a yearly calf. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln gives a postpartum interval of 50 to 60 days, averaging 55, for beef cows under ideal conditions. With a 283 day gestation that leaves a short gap if you want a calf every year.

Climate, feed and labor shape the right season for your operation, and the calculator only shows the dates.
Days and Months Pregnant
Add an as-of date and the calculator counts the days from breeding. It also shows months, using 30.4375 days to a month, and the days left to calving.

A cow 153 days along is 5.0 months pregnant with 130 days to go on a 283 day gestation. The months table converts common days into months and shows the share of pregnancy complete.
Count in days for planning. Nine calendar months are about 274 days, so thinking in months can put the date a week or two off.
Limits of the Estimate
The date is only as good as the breeding date you enter. University of Wisconsin Extension warns that results are only as good as the information entered. If the breeding date is a guess, the window should be widened.

The calculator does not account for breed, the calf's sex or health unless you change the gestation length yourself. It does not diagnose pregnancy or predict problems, and it does not replace a veterinarian.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Cattle Gestation Calculator
How do I calculate a cow's due date?
Add the gestation length to the breeding date. Most cattle average about 283 days, so a cow bred on March 1, 2026 is due around Dec 9, 2026. Enter the breeding date in the calculator and it shows the due date with a window on either side.
How long is a cow pregnant?
The Nebraska beef FAQ gives a range of 279 to 287 days for gestation, with 283 days common for most breeds. That is about nine months, a little over nine and a half at the top end. Individual cows can calve earlier or later, so plan around a window rather than a single day.
How long are cows pregnant in months?
About 9 to 9.5 months. A 283 day gestation is 9.3 months when you divide by 30.4375, the average length of a month. The count in months is approximate, so use days for planning. The months table converts days pregnant into months.
How many days is a cow pregnant?
Typically 283 days, with a common range of 279 to 287 days according to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. A 2024 Oklahoma State study averaged 280.2 days across 253 to 300 days. The calculator starts at 283 and lets you change it for your herd.
If a cow is bred today, when will she calve?
Add 283 days to the breeding date. A cow bred on October 6, 2026 is expected to calve around Jul 16, 2027, with a window of about four days either side. Enter your own breeding date in the calculator for the exact figure.
What is the gestation period of a cow in days?
About 283 days on average. Breeds and individuals vary, with reported breed averages from about 278.6 days in Angus to 284.3 days in Simmental in Beef Improvement Federation data. Use 283 when you do not know, and adjust once you have records for your own herd.
How do I calculate a calving date from a breeding date?
Calving date = breeding date + gestation days. With 283 days, a breeding date of May 10, 2026 gives Feb 17, 2027. Use 279 for a short gestation and 287 for a long one to see the range. The calendar table lists the first of every month.
How do I find the breeding date from a calving date?
Subtract the gestation length from the calving date. A calf born on March 15, 2027 was bred around Jun 5, 2026 at 283 days. Choose the calving date mode in the calculator to work backwards, and change the gestation box if your herd averages a different number.
When should I breed to calve in spring?
Work backwards from the calving date you want. To start calving on March 1, 2027, the first breeding date would be about May 22, 2026 at 283 days. The planning table gives the date for the first of every month. Your own season depends on climate and feed.
Is 283 days the average cattle gestation length?
It is the figure most sources use, and Nebraska calls it common for most breeds. A 2024 Oklahoma State study found 280.2 days on average. Treat 283 as a starting point and adjust it with your own herd records over the years.
Does the sex of the calf change gestation length?
Slightly. Beef Improvement Federation notes male calves often lengthen gestation, by 1.5 days in Simmental and 1.2 days in Angus. Oklahoma State reported 280.8 days for bull calves and 279.6 for heifer calves. You cannot know the sex in advance, so the effect only shifts the window.
Does breed change gestation length?
Yes, a little. Beef Improvement Federation reports 284.3 days in Simmental and 278.6 in Angus, and older data lists Hereford at 286.1 days. Because averages differ between studies, use the gestation box to enter the figure for your breed or herd.
Do heifers have a shorter gestation than cows?
In Simmental data from Beef Improvement Federation, gestation was 1.9 days longer for calves born to mature cows than to heifers. The difference is small, so most planning uses a single figure. You can lower the gestation box slightly for heifers.
Do fall and spring calving seasons differ?
A 2024 Oklahoma State summary reported 279.1 days for fall calvers and 281.1 days for spring calvers. The gap is about two days, so it matters little for planning. The calculator's window covers differences of this size, so one setting can serve both seasons.
How accurate is a cattle gestation calculator?
It is exactly as accurate as the breeding date and gestation length you enter. University of Wisconsin Extension warns that results are only as good as the information entered. Gestation varies by a few days either way, so use the window, not a single date.
What breeding date should I use?
Use the date of artificial insemination, a recorded natural service or an embryo transfer. Beef Improvement Federation defines gestation as the days between the breeding date and the calving date. If a cow ran with a bull, the date is uncertain, so treat the result as a wide window.
How early or late can a cow calve?
A 2024 Oklahoma State study found a range of 253 to 300 days, which is far wider than the common 279 to 287. The calculator's window defaults to four days either side, and you can widen it when the breeding date is uncertain.
What does the calving window mean?
The window is the span of dates around the due date when a normal birth is likely. The calculator shows an earliest and a latest date, set by the plus or minus days box. A window of four days covers 279 to 287 days around the 283 day average.
How many times a year can a cow have a calf?
About once. Wikipedia notes that cows give birth to one calf per year to keep producing milk. With a 283 day gestation, a postpartum interval of 50 to 60 days under ideal conditions, and a short gap to rebreeding, a yearly calf is the target.
How long after calving can a cow be bred again?
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln gives a postpartum interval of 50 to 60 days, an average of 55, for beef cows under ideal conditions. Breeding again soon after that keeps a 365 day calving interval within reach. Your vet can advise on the right timing.
How many days pregnant is my cow today?
Enter the breeding date and today's date in the as-of box. The calculator subtracts the dates and shows the days pregnant, the months pregnant and the days to calving. If the as-of date is before breeding or well after calving, it shows n/a.
How many months pregnant is my cow?
Divide the days pregnant by 30.4375. A cow 153 days into pregnancy is 5.0 months along. The calculator shows this as months pregnant when you give the as-of date. A full gestation of 283 days is about 9.3 months, so a cow past 9 months is nearly there.
Can I use this calculator for dairy cattle?
Yes. The calculation is the same arithmetic, and the gestation box can be changed for your herd. Dairy and beef cows are both cattle, so the 279 to 287 day range is a reasonable start. Use your own records when you have them.
Can I use it for bulls, buffalo or other species?
This calculator is set up for cattle. Other species have different gestation lengths, so use the species' own calculator, such as the goat or horse gestation calculators on this site. You can change the gestation box, but the guidance on this page applies to cattle.
What if I do not know the breeding date?
Then the result is only a rough guess. Pregnancy diagnosis, such as ultrasound, is how breeding dates are often estimated, as Beef Improvement Federation notes. Ask your veterinarian to estimate the stage of pregnancy, and treat the calculator's output as a wide window.
How do I plan a calving season?
Pick when you want calving to start and work back 283 days to the first breeding date. Calving starting March 1, 2027 means breeding from about May 22, 2026. The planning table lists every month. Feed, weather and labor all shape the best window.
Is 9 months the same as 283 days?
Close but not equal. Nine calendar months are about 274 days, so a 283 day gestation is nine and a quarter months or so. That is why counting in months can put the date a week or two off. Count in days for planning.
Does the calculator replace a veterinarian?
No. It does simple date arithmetic and cannot assess the health of a cow or calf. Contact a veterinarian for pregnancy diagnosis, calving difficulty or concerns about a cow, and use this tool only to organise dates and plan ahead.
How do I use this cattle gestation calculator?
Choose whether you know the breeding date or the calving date. Enter the date, set the gestation length if it differs from 283 days, and set the window. Add an as-of date to see the days pregnant and days left. The results show the calving date, window and breeding date.
