That's a much wider planning window than a dog or goat owner would work with from the same kind of calculator, and it's not a limitation of this tool — it reflects genuine, well-documented biological variation in mares.

Why Horse Gestation Length Varies More Than Other Livestock

A dog's pregnancy runs 57 to 65 days no matter the breed, and a goat's runs roughly 145 to 155 days — both fairly tight windows. A mare's does not work the same way.

Agricultural extension guidance, including a University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension publication on management of the pregnant mare, puts the average horse gestation length at 335 to 340 days but treats anything from 320 to 370 days as a normal, healthy pregnancy — a 50-day spread compared to roughly 8 days for dogs.

A foal born before 326 days is considered premature and needs immediate veterinary attention, but a foal arriving at day 365, more than a month past the average, isn't automatically abnormal the way an equivalently late dog or goat pregnancy would be.

The spread isn't random. A 2015 study of Warmblood mares published in PLOS ONE found a mean gestation length of 338.5 days with individual mares ranging from 313 to 370 days, and identified several real, measurable factors behind that variation.

Foal sex was one of the clearest: colt foals gestated significantly longer on average (338.3 days) than filly foals (335.7 days), a roughly 2.6-day difference that held up statistically across the study population. The same UNL extension guidance independently confirms this pattern, citing colts as running 2 to 7 days longer than fillies.

Neither source claims foal sex alone can be predicted from gestation length — the correlation runs the other direction, longer pregnancies tending to produce colts, not the reverse.

Season and light exposure matter too, and by a larger margin than sex does.

Extension guidance notes that mares foaling in late spring and summer, under naturally lengthening daylight, tend to have shorter gestations than mares foaling in the depths of winter in January or February; artificially extending daylight hours during the final third of pregnancy has been shown to shorten gestation by around 10 days in research settings.

The Warmblood study found the same seasonal pattern independently: mares bred earlier in the year had significantly longer gestations than mares bred in June or July. A mare's own body condition plays a smaller but real role as well — thinner mares, with a body condition score of 4 or below, tend to run slightly longer than mares in optimal condition.

One assumption breeders often make turns out not to hold up under study: that a pony or miniature horse simply carries shorter than a big breed because she's smaller. A 2017 analysis of gestation records across 25 horse breeds, published in Mammalian Biology, found significant differences between breeds — a full 11-day spread between the shortest and longest breed averages, running from 340 days in Friesians up to 351 days in Welsh Cobs — but found no significant relationship between a breed's typical body size and its typical gestation length. The pony-sized Welsh Cob, in that dataset, actually averaged a longer gestation than the considerably larger Friesian. Breed clearly matters, in other words, but not simply because of size.

Maiden Mares vs. Experienced Mares: What the Data Actually Shows

It's a common assumption among breeders that a mare's first pregnancy runs differently than her later ones, and the research generally supports it, though the effect is smaller and less consistent than the foal-sex or seasonal effects above.

The 2015 Warmblood mare study found that three-year-old maiden mares, along with mares over 12 years old, showed longer mean gestations than mares in their prime reproductive years (roughly 4 to 8 and 9 to 12 years old) — though the researchers noted this effect only became statistically clear once individual mare-to-mare variation was accounted for, since some of the age effect and some of the maiden-versus-experienced effect overlap.

The same study found that a mare's own individual history was actually the single strongest predictor of her gestation length across multiple pregnancies, more influential than any other factor measured, with a consistent correlation of about 0.4 between one pregnancy's length and the next in the same mare.

In practice, that means a mare who has foaled before and consistently ran a few days long or short of average is likely to do the same again, which is genuinely useful information a first-time maiden mare's owner simply doesn't have yet.

Maiden-mare status also shows up in a completely different, practical way: predicting foaling itself.

Veterinary reproduction sources note that the mammary-secretion calcium test used to predict foaling within 24 to 72 hours — described in the next section — tends to be less reliable in maiden mares specifically, because their udder development and the associated calcium shift in mammary secretions before foaling are often slower and less pronounced than in mares who have foaled before.

That doesn't make the test useless for a maiden mare, but it does mean physical monitoring and a wider watch window matter more for a first-time mother than for an experienced one, on top of already carrying the wider due-date uncertainty that comes with horses generally.

Signs Foaling Is Close, and Why Vets Treat the Window as Wide

Because the calculated due date carries a multi-week margin of error by nature, experienced breeders lean more heavily on physical signs than the calendar date alone as foaling approaches — more so than owners of most other livestock species need to.

Research on this method (Ley et al.) found that a calcium reading above roughly 200 parts per million corresponds to a 54% probability of foaling within 24 hours, an 84% probability within 48 hours, and a 97% probability within 72 hours, while readings approaching or exceeding 400 ppm are commonly associated with foaling within about a day.

Conversely, a reading under 200 ppm carries less than a 1% chance of foaling in the next 24 hours, which makes the test genuinely useful for ruling out an imminent foaling and easing a breeder off overnight vigil, not just for confirming one.
