How the Asphalt Driveway Cost Calculator Formula Works
The cost of an asphalt driveway starts with how much asphalt it needs. Asphalt is bought by weight, so the calculator finds the volume (area times the compacted thickness in feet), multiplies by the density of compacted asphalt, about 145 pounds per cubic foot, and divides by 2,000 to get short tons. It then adds an extra percentage and multiplies by your price per ton.
The other lines turn that into a full driveway cost. The base layer is its volume in cubic yards, with the same extra, times your price per cubic yard. Labour and equipment are a price per square foot times the area. Delivery and other costs are flat amounts. Sealing is optional and is a price per square foot times the area.
The total is the sum of the lines. The page also shows the cost per square foot and the all-in cost per ton ordered. Every price is yours to enter and the defaults are placeholders, not quotes. In metric, areas are in square metres, thickness in centimetres, the asphalt price is per tonne and the base price is per cubic metre.
tons = area (sq ft) × thickness (in) / 12 × density (lb per cubic foot) / 2000; total = tons × (1 + extra) × price + base + labour + delivery + sealing + other- areasq ft or m2400Length times width, a circle, or a known area.

A Real Worked Example
A driveway is 20 feet by 20 feet, 400 square feet, paved 3 inches thick when compacted. The volume is 3.70 cubic yards and at 145 pounds per cubic foot it weighs 7.25 tons. With 5 percent extra the order is 7.613 tons.
At a placeholder $100 per ton the asphalt is $761.25. A 6 inch base with 5 percent extra is 7.78 cubic yards, $311.11 at $40. Labour at $1.50 per square foot is $600.00, and delivery is $150.00. The total is $1,822.36, or $4.556 per square foot.
A 300 ft driveway, 10 ft wide
A driveway 300 feet long and 10 feet wide is 3,000 square feet. At 3 inches compacted it weighs 54.38 tons, and 57.094 tons with 5 percent extra.
Asphalt is $5,709.38 at $100 per ton. The base is 58.33 cubic yards, $2,333.33, labour is $4,500.00 and delivery is $150.00. The total is $12,692.71, which is $4.231 per square foot. Long drives spread the fixed delivery charge, so the cost per square foot is lower than the 20 × 20 ft example.
A known area of 1,000 sq ft
Choose the known area option with 1,000 square feet at 3 inches. The asphalt weighs 18.12 tons and the order is 19.031 tons.
Asphalt is $1,903.13, the base $777.78, labour $1,500.00 and delivery $150.00, for $4,330.90. That is $4.331 per square foot and $227.57 for each ton ordered once every line is included.
1,500 sq ft at 4 inches with sealcoating
A 1,500 square foot area at 4 inches compacted needs 36.25 tons, and 38.063 tons with extra. Asphalt is $3,806.25.
The base is $1,166.67, labour is $2,250.00, delivery is $150.00 and sealcoating at a placeholder $0.25 per square foot adds $375.00. The total is $7,747.92, or $5.165 per square foot.
A round turnaround 30 ft across at 2 inches
A circular pad 30 feet across has an area of 706.9 square feet. At 2 inches compacted it needs 8.54 tons, and 8.968 with extra.
Asphalt is $896.83, the base is $549.78, labour is $1,060.29 and delivery is $150.00. The total is $2,656.89, which is $3.759 per square foot.
Metric: 12 m x 4 m at 8 cm
Switch to metric with a driveway 12 by 4 metres, 8 cm thick, at 2,320 kg per cubic metre. The area is 48 square metres and the asphalt weighs 8.909 tonnes, 9.354 with 5 percent extra.
At a placeholder 110 per tonne the asphalt is $1,028.97. A 15 cm base at 55 per cubic metre is $415.80. Labour at 16 per square metre is $768.00, and delivery is $200.00. The total is $2,412.77, or $50.27 per square metre.
What Else to Know
How the Asphalt Driveway Cost Is Calculated
An asphalt driveway cost has two parts: the asphalt, which is bought by weight, and everything else the job needs. The calculator finds the area, multiplies by the compacted thickness to get a volume, and multiplies by density to get tons. It adds an extra percentage and multiplies by your price per ton. It then adds a base layer, labour, delivery, optional sealing and other costs.

This is an asphalt cost calculator, an asphalt paving cost calculator and an asphalt driveway estimator in one. The tonnage uses the same area and depth maths as any asphalt quantity calculation, and the result shows the total, the cost per square foot and the all-in cost per ton ordered. For a 20 × 20 ft drive the order is 7.613 tons.
Every price on the page is a placeholder. Asphalt prices change with region, plant, season and job size, so replace each default with a local quote before relying on a total.

How Many Tons of Asphalt a Driveway Needs
Tonnage comes first, because the material cost follows from it. Multiply the area in square feet by the thickness in inches, divide by 12 to get cubic feet, multiply by 145 pounds per cubic foot, and divide by 2,000. A 20 × 20 ft driveway at 3 inches is 7.25 tons. A 1,000 sq ft area is 18.12 tons, and a 1,500 sq ft area is 27.19 tons.

The Asphalt Institute's magazine gives a field rule of 110 pounds per square yard per inch of thickness, and notes that some agencies use 106 or 112. The 110 rule is the same as about 147 pounds per cubic foot, so the two methods agree closely. The density is editable if your supplier gives another figure.
The tons table lists common sizes with the order after 5 percent extra. Odd shapes can be split into rectangles and entered as a known area.
Compacted Thickness and Cost
Enter the compacted thickness, which is the finished depth after rolling. Hot mix is laid thicker and compresses under the roller, so loose depth would overstate the tons. Thickness drives the asphalt cost directly. Going from 2 to 3 inches raises the tons by 50 percent, and from 3 to 4 inches by about 33 percent.

The thickness table shows a 20 × 20 ft driveway at four thicknesses. The total moves from $1,569 at 2 inches to $2,076 at 4 inches, a smaller change than the tonnage because the base, labour and delivery do not scale with thickness.
How thick a driveway should be is a design question that depends on the traffic, the soil and the base. The Asphalt Institute notes that lift thickness should be at least 3 times the nominal maximum aggregate size. Ask a paving contractor or engineer, and use this tool to price the thickness they specify.
Price per Ton and What Changes It
The price per ton is the number most likely to be wrong, so the page uses a clearly labelled placeholder of $100 and invites you to replace it. Ask local asphalt plants or paving contractors for a delivered price per ton for the mix you need, including any haul charge and minimum load. Prices vary with region, season and the cost of the binder and aggregate.

The cost table shows what a given tonnage costs at four example prices. For example, 7.6 tons at $100 is $760 and at $150 it is $1,140. The per square foot table turns a price per ton and a thickness into a cost for each foot of surface, for instance $1.903 at 3 inches and $100 per ton.
In metric the asphalt price is per tonne, and one tonne is 1.102 short tons, so a price per ton becomes a price per tonne when multiplied by 1.102.
Base Layer, Labour and Delivery
Asphalt sits on a compacted stone base, and the base is a real cost. The calculator takes a thickness and a price per cubic yard of delivered base material, and adds the same extra percentage. A 6 inch base under 400 sq ft is 7.78 cubic yards. If you only need the quantity of stone, the gravel calculator gives it by area and depth.

Labour and equipment are priced per square foot, with a placeholder of $1.50, because paving crews usually quote by area. Delivery is a flat amount for trucking. Use the other costs box for removal of an old driveway, grading, edging, drainage and permits.

The labour table shows how the total of the 20 × 20 ft example changes with labour from $1 to $3 per square foot. Because labour is a big part of the bill, compare contractors on the total and the cost per square foot, not only on the price per ton.

Sealing and Maintenance
Sealcoating is optional, so it is switched off by default. Switch it on and enter a price per square foot, and the calculator adds area times that price. The sealcoat table shows costs for several areas at three example prices.
The Asphalt Institute says a well-constructed low-traffic driveway should not require sealing for approximately 2 to 5 years, so sealing is normally a later cost rather than part of the first paving quote. Wikipedia describes sealcoating as a maintenance measure that helps keep water and petroleum products out of the surface.
If you include sealing in a lifetime budget, add each recoat separately. For a 1,500 sq ft driveway, one coat at $0.25 per square foot is $375.
Asphalt Compared With Other Surfaces
People often compare asphalt with concrete, gravel and pavers. A fair comparison uses the total installed cost per square foot for each surface, over the same area and including the base, labour and any upkeep. This calculator gives that figure for asphalt at the prices you enter, so you can set it beside quotes for other surfaces.
Concrete is priced by the cubic yard and asphalt by the ton, so a comparison on price per unit of material is not meaningful. Compare totals. Also ask each contractor about thickness, base, warranty and expected maintenance, since these differ between surfaces and between jobs.
No price on this page is a market figure. Placeholders exist only so the worked examples run, and you should replace each one.
Limits of the Estimate and Related Calculators
This is an estimate. It assumes a flat surface of uniform compacted thickness and uses prices you supply, so it cannot know your local rates, your ground, your design or your contractor's terms. It does not design the pavement or set its thickness. Follow local code and the contractor's specification, and have a qualified professional confirm the base and thickness for your traffic and soil.

For the base stone use the gravel calculator. If you are pricing the job as a contractor, the markup calculator turns costs into a price, and the loan payment calculator shows what financing the project would cost per month.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Asphalt Driveway Cost Calculator
How much does it cost to asphalt a 20x20 driveway?
At the placeholder prices in this calculator, a 20 × 20 ft driveway at 3 inches needs 7.61 tons with 5 percent extra. Asphalt is $761.25, a 6 inch base $311.11, labour $600.00 and delivery $150.00, for $1,822.36. That is $4.56 per square foot. Replace every price with a local quote.
Is 3 inches of asphalt enough for a driveway?
Thickness is a design decision that depends on the traffic, the soil and the base, so a calculator cannot say. The page uses 3 inches compacted as an editable default. The Asphalt Institute notes that minimum lift thickness should be at least 3 times the nominal maximum aggregate size. Ask a local paving contractor or engineer what your driveway needs.
How much to pave a 300 ft driveway?
Assume a width, since cost depends on it. For a driveway 300 ft long and 10 ft wide at 3 inches, the area is 3,000 sq ft and the order is 57.09 tons. At the placeholder prices the total is $12,693, or $4.23 per square foot. Enter your own width, prices and base to get your figure.
How much does 1000 square feet of asphalt cost?
A 1,000 sq ft area at 3 inches compacted needs 18.12 tons, 19.03 with 5 percent extra. At a placeholder $100 per ton the asphalt is $1,903.13. With a base, labour and delivery the placeholder total is $4,331, or $4.33 per square foot. Local prices will differ.
How much does a 1,500 sq ft asphalt driveway cost?
At 4 inches compacted and 1,500 sq ft, the order is 38.06 tons. With the placeholder prices, plus sealcoat at $0.25 per sq ft, the total is $7,748, or $5.17 per square foot. At 3 inches without sealing it is $6,421. Use your own quotes.
How much does a 1,000 sq ft asphalt driveway cost?
The calculator gives the pieces: 19.03 tons of asphalt, 19.44 cubic yards of base, labour and delivery. At the placeholder prices the total is $4,331. At $120 per ton for asphalt it is $4,712. Prices change with region, season and job size, so get local quotes.
What is the cost of a 20 x 20 asphalt driveway?
With the defaults the cost is $1,822.36: asphalt $761.25, base $311.11, labour $600.00 and delivery $150.00. Those are placeholders. Change the price per ton, base price, labour per square foot and delivery to match your quotes, and the total and the cost per square foot update.
How do I calculate asphalt driveway cost?
Find the tons: area times compacted thickness in feet times about 145 lb per cubic foot, divided by 2,000. Add extra, then multiply by the price per ton. Add the base layer, labour, delivery and any sealing. For 400 sq ft at 3 inches that is 7.25 tons, 7.61 to order, and $761.25 of asphalt.
What is the cost of asphalt per ton?
The price per ton depends on your region, the mix, the plant, the haul distance and the season, so no single figure is right. Ask local plants or paving contractors for a delivered price and enter it. The calculator's default of $100 per ton is a placeholder to show the maths. The tables show costs at four example prices.
How many tons of asphalt for a driveway?
It depends on area and thickness. At 3 inches compacted, one square foot needs 0.0181 tons, so 1,000 sq ft needs 18.12 tons and 1,500 sq ft needs 27.19 tons before extra. A common rule is 110 pounds per square yard per inch, which gives similar numbers.
How do I price a base layer under asphalt?
Enter the base thickness and the price per cubic yard of the base material, delivered. The calculator works out cubic yards with the same extra percent. A 6 inch base under 400 sq ft is 7.78 cubic yards, or $311.11 at a placeholder $40. For a gravel-only estimate use the gravel calculator.
Is there a free asphalt calculator in square feet?
Yes. This one is free and works in square feet or square metres. Choose a rectangle, a circle or a known area, enter the compacted thickness and your prices, and read the tons, the cost lines, the total and the cost per square foot. It is an estimate based on the prices you enter.
Can I use this asphalt driveway calculator in Canada?
Yes. Choose metric, enter lengths in metres, thickness in centimetres and prices per tonne, per cubic metre and per square metre. A 12 × 4 m driveway at 8 cm needs 9.35 tonnes with 5 percent extra and costs $2,413 at the placeholder prices. Replace them with local quotes.
Is asphalt cheaper than concrete for a driveway?
It depends on local prices and the design, so check both quotes. An asphalt job is priced from tons, and a concrete job from cubic yards. Work out the total cost per square foot for each, including the base, labour, and upkeep such as sealing, then compare them. The calculator gives the asphalt total and cost per square foot to set beside a concrete quote.
Does the asphalt driveway cost calculator work near me?
It works anywhere because you supply the prices. It does not look up local rates. Get two or three quotes from paving contractors near you, enter the asphalt price per ton, base price, labour per square foot and delivery, and compare the totals. Ask each contractor what thickness and base they plan.
What does a 2 inch asphalt driveway cost compared with 3 inch?
Thickness changes the tons in proportion. At the placeholder prices a 20 × 20 ft driveway at 2 inches costs $1,569 and at 3 inches $1,822. The base, labour and delivery stay the same, so the gap is smaller than the tonnage change. Thickness is a design choice for a contractor to confirm.
How do I add sealcoating to the cost?
Switch sealing on and enter a price per square foot. The calculator adds area times that price. For 1,500 sq ft at $0.25 that is $375.00. The Asphalt Institute says a well-constructed low-traffic driveway should not need sealing for approximately 2 to 5 years, so sealing is usually a later cost. Leave it off for the first quote.
What is compacted thickness?
Compacted thickness is the finished depth of the asphalt layer after it has been rolled. Hot mix is laid thicker and compresses under the roller. Tonnage depends on the compacted depth, so enter the thickness you want when finished, not the loose depth when it is spread. The default here is 3 inches.
How much extra asphalt should I order?
The default is 5 percent extra for trimming, an uneven base and small variations in thickness. On 7.25 tons that adds 0.36 tons. Use more for a rough base or many edges. Local plants may also have a minimum load, which you can add under other costs.
What density does the calculator use for asphalt?
It uses 145 pounds per cubic foot, or 2,320 kg per cubic metre, which you can edit. The Asphalt Institute's magazine gives a typical spread rate of 110 pounds per square yard per inch of thickness, which equals about 147 pounds per cubic foot. Some state agencies use 106 to 112, so ask your supplier for their figure.
How do I cost an asphalt driveway with a turnaround?
Use the sum of areas. Work out the main drive, add the circle for the turnaround, and enter the total as a known area. A circle 30 ft across has 707 sq ft. At 2 inches it needs 8.97 tons with extra, and costs $2,657 at the placeholder prices.
