Multiply the area you're covering by the depth (converted from inches to feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to convert that into cubic yards. Multiply by density and you get tons, which is the unit most gravel suppliers actually sell and deliver by.

A Real Worked Example

A 432 square foot area, say a 12 by 36 foot driveway, at 3 inches deep works out to 108 cubic feet. Divide by 27 and that's exactly 4 cubic yards. At a typical density of 1.4 tons per cubic yard, that's 5.6 tons of gravel, costing $212.80 at $38 per ton. Most suppliers sell and deliver gravel by the ton rather than the yard, so the tonnage figure is usually the one you'll actually order.

What Else to Know

Choosing the Right Gravel for the Job

Pea gravel and crushed stone cover most driveway and path projects, but three other materials come up often enough to be worth knowing. River rock runs 1 to 3 inches across, smooth and rounded rather than angular, and works best as a decorative fill for dry creek beds or drainage swales rather than a surface you'd drive or walk on regularly, since rounded stones shift underfoot even more than pea gravel does. Decomposed granite is crushed granite ground down to a mix of fine gravel and sand-sized particles; once compacted it forms a firm, natural-looking surface that's popular for garden paths, patios, and xeriscaped yards, though it's a poor fit for a driveway that carries regular vehicle weight.

Quarry process, sometimes sold as crusher run, mixes crushed stone with stone dust that packs into a dense, load-bearing layer, which is why it turns up so often as the base course under a driveway's finish gravel rather than as the visible top layer itself.

Within crushed stone, the number on the invoice tells you the size: #57 stone runs about 1/2 to 3/4 inch and handles driveway base layers, French drain fill, and backfill well, since the larger angular pieces lock together while still draining freely. #8 stone runs smaller, about 3/8 to 1/2 inch, and works better as a finer top layer for walkways or as bedding under pavers, where a smooth finished surface matters more than load-bearing strength. Measuring an Irregular Area

A rectangular driveway or square patio is a five-second measurement, but most residential lots aren't that tidy. For an L-shaped driveway, a curved bed, or a yard with a parking pad attached, split the space into two or more rectangles you can measure independently, then add each section's square footage together rather than averaging one length and width across the whole shape. A driveway that's 12 by 30 feet with a 10 by 15 foot pad attached is 360 plus 150, or 510 square feet total, not some estimated middle figure. Curved edges can be squared off to the nearest straight line for estimating purposes; the small gap lost at the curve falls well within the buffer most people already add for waste.

Sloped ground adds a second wrinkle. Gravel covers the actual ground surface, not the flat footprint you'd see looking straight down from above, so on any noticeable grade, run the tape along the slope itself rather than sighting a level line across the top. On a gentle slope the difference barely registers, but on a steep bank or a sloped driveway approach, measuring only the flat horizontal distance will undercount the area and leave the project short by the time the last few feet are spread.

What Actually Drives the Cost

The calculator above gives a straight tons-times-price figure, but two orders with identical tonnage can land at very different totals depending on how the gravel reaches the site. Bulk delivery is almost always cheaper per ton, commonly landing somewhere in the $30 to $75 range depending on material and region, against bagged gravel from a hardware store that works out closer to $300 to $600 per ton once you account for how little a single bag covers.

The tradeoff is that most bulk suppliers set a minimum delivered order, often 3 to 5 tons, and add a delivery fee that scales with distance, so a small top-up project can sometimes cost less picked up in bags than ordered in bulk even though the per-ton bulk price looks far better on paper. For anything under a couple hundred square feet, it's worth pricing both ways before assuming bulk wins automatically.

Price per ton also varies by region, driven mainly by how far the material travels from the quarry and local demand, so the same gravel type can cost noticeably more in one metro area than another.
