How the Concrete Driveway Cost Calculator Formula Works
The cost of a concrete driveway starts with how much concrete it holds. Multiply the area by the thickness in feet, which is the thickness in inches divided by 12, and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. Add a waste percentage, because ground is never perfectly flat and some concrete is lost, to get the amount to order.
For delivered concrete, multiply the order by your price per cubic yard. Many suppliers add a short load fee when the order is smaller than a minimum, so the calculator adds a flat fee when the order is below the limit you set. For bagged concrete, it divides the order in cubic feet by the yield of a bag, 0.30, 0.45 or 0.60 cubic feet for 40, 60 and 80 lb bags of QUIKRETE Concrete Mix, rounds up to whole bags and multiplies by the bag price.
The other lines are optional. Reinforcement and finishing are priced per square foot, and a flat amount covers base, forms, labour, removal or permits. The total is the concrete plus those lines, and the page also shows the cost per square foot and per cubic yard. Every price is yours to enter. The defaults are placeholders, not quotes. In metric, areas are in square metres, thickness in centimetres and the price is per cubic metre.

A Real Worked Example
A driveway is 20 feet by 20 feet and 4 inches thick, delivered ready-mix at a placeholder $150 per yard. The area is 400 square feet and the volume is 4.94 cubic yards. With 10 percent waste the order is 5.43 yards.
Concrete costs $814.81. The order is above the 4 yard limit, so there is no short load fee. Reinforcement at $0.75 per square foot adds $300.00 and finishing at $1.00 adds $400.00. The total is $1,514.81, or $3.79 per square foot.
A 10 x 10 ft pad with a short load fee
A 10 by 10 foot pad at 4 inches holds 1.23 cubic yards, 1.36 with waste. That is below the 4 yard limit, so the placeholder $100 short load fee applies.
Concrete is $203.70 plus $100.00 in fees, $303.70. With reinforcement of $75.00 and finishing of $100.00, the total is $478.70, which is $4.79 per square foot, far above the large slab.
A known area of 1,000 sq ft
Choose the known area option with 1,000 square feet at 4 inches. The volume is 12.35 cubic yards and the order with waste is 13.58 yards.
The concrete is $2,037.04 at $150 per yard. Reinforcement is $750.00 and finishing is $1,000.00, for a total of $3,787.04. That works out to $278.86 per cubic yard ordered once the other lines are included.
The same 10 x 10 ft pad in bags
Switch to bagged mix for the 10 by 10 foot pad. The order is 1.36 cubic yards, or 36.7 cubic feet. At 0.60 cubic feet per 80 lb bag that is 62 bags.
At a placeholder $7 a bag the concrete costs $434.00, against $303.70 delivered with the short load fee. Add $75.00 for reinforcement and $100.00 for finishing, and the total is $609.00.
A 20 x 30 ft drive at 5 inches with other costs
A 20 by 30 foot driveway, 5 inches thick, is 600 square feet. The volume is 9.26 cubic yards and the order is 10.19 yards.
Concrete is $1,527.78. Reinforcement is $450.00, finishing is $600.00, and a flat 1,200 dollars for base, forms and labour brings the total to $3,777.78, which is $6.30 per square foot.
Metric: 6 m x 5 m at 10 cm
Switch to metric with a 6 by 5 metre driveway, 10 cm thick, 5 percent waste and a placeholder 200 per cubic metre. The area is 30 square metres and the volume is 3.0 cubic metres, which is 3.92 cubic yards.
The order is 3.15 cubic metres, above the 3 cubic metre limit, so concrete costs $630.00. Reinforcement at 8 per square metre adds $240.00 and finishing at 10 adds $300.00. The total is $1,170.00.
What Else to Know
How the Concrete Driveway Cost Is Calculated
The cost of a concrete driveway is the quantity of concrete times its price, plus everything else the job needs. The calculator works out the area, multiplies by the thickness to get a volume, adds a waste percentage and converts to cubic yards, the unit ready-mix is sold in. It then multiplies by your price per cubic yard and adds optional lines for a short load fee, reinforcement, finishing and other costs.

This is also a concrete price calculator, a concrete cost calculator and a concrete pricing calculator in one. To calculate concrete driveway cost by hand, find the cubic yards, add waste, multiply by the price, and add the other lines. The total, the cost per square foot and the cost per cubic yard ordered all appear in the results.
Every price on the page is a placeholder. Concrete prices change with region, season and supplier, so replace each default with a quote before relying on a total.

How Much Concrete Is Needed
Quantity comes first, because every cost follows from it. Multiply length by width for the area, multiply by the thickness in inches, divide by 12 for cubic feet, and divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 20 × 20 ft driveway at 4 inches is 4.94 cubic yards. A 20 × 30 ft slab is 7.41 yards, a 30 × 30 ft slab is 11.11 and a 40 × 60 ft slab is 29.63.

The slab cost table lists common sizes with the order after 10 percent waste. If the driveway is an odd shape, split it into rectangles and add the areas, then use the known area option. If you only want the quantity for other shapes such as footings, walls and stairs, a volume calculator for each shape does that job.
A thicker slab holds more concrete. Going from 4 inches to 5 inches adds 25 percent to the volume, and 6 inches adds 50 percent.
Price per Cubic Yard and Cubic Metre
The price per cubic yard is the biggest number in the estimate and the one most likely to be wrong, so the calculator uses a clearly labelled placeholder of $150 and invites you to change it. Ask two or three local ready-mix suppliers for a price per yard, including any delivery charge and the mix strength you need. The cost of concrete per yard changes with the mix, the distance and the season.

The cost table shows what a given volume costs at four example prices. For instance, 11 yards at $150 is $1,650.00 and 14 yards at $150 is $2,100.00. In metric the price is per cubic metre, and one cubic metre is 1.308 cubic yards, so a price per yard is a price per cubic metre divided by 1.308.
The per square foot table turns the price into a cost for each foot of surface at 4, 5 and 6 inches.
Short Load Fees and Minimum Orders
Ready-mix trucks carry a full load most efficiently, so a small order often attracts a short load fee. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association and the American Society of Concrete Contractors publish an ordering checklist that lists short loads among the extra charges to agree on with the supplier. The fee and the size below which it applies depend on the supplier.

The calculator takes a flat fee and a limit. If the order, after waste, is below the limit, the fee is added. The placeholder is $100 below 4 yards. A 10 × 10 ft pad needs 1.36 yards, so it pays the fee, and the effective price per yard is $223.64 instead of $150. Set the fee to 0 if your supplier has none.
Delivered Ready-Mix or Bagged Concrete
Bagged mix suits tiny jobs and places a truck cannot reach. The calculator prices both routes so you can compare. An 80 lb bag of QUIKRETE Concrete Mix No. 1101 yields about 0.60 cubic feet, a 60 lb bag 0.45 and a 40 lb bag 0.30, according to its data sheet. At those yields a cubic yard is 45 bags of 80 lb mix.

At a placeholder $7 per bag, one yard of bagged concrete is $315.00. Delivered, the same yard costs $250.00 with the short load fee. At the placeholder prices bags are cheaper only below about 0.6 cubic yard. Beyond that, ready-mix wins even with the short load fee, and it saves a great deal of mixing. The comparison table shows the numbers.
Bags also suit awkward spots a truck cannot reach, but you carry and mix every one.
Reinforcement, Finishing and Other Costs
Concrete is only part of the bill. County Materials, a concrete producer, says steel reinforcement is optional but often used to contain cracks, in the form of bars, wire mesh or fibres, and that it should be supported in the upper third of the slab. The calculator prices reinforcement and finishing per square foot, with placeholders of $0.75 and $1.00, and you can set either to zero.

The other costs box takes a flat amount for items that do not scale with area, such as excavation, a gravel base, forms, labour, removal of an old driveway and permits. If a contractor quotes the whole job, compare their price with the total and the cost per square foot.
A contractor's markup and overhead are not included unless you add them to the other costs.
Thickness, Slope and Planning
County Materials recommends a minimum thickness of 4 inches for a driveway and says thickness affects load capacity more than the strength of the concrete. Heavier vehicles may call for a thicker slab, which costs more because volume rises with thickness. Local code may set its own minimums, and a professional can tell you what your driveway needs.

The same source advises a base and subgrade that are uniform in firmness, grade and dampness, and a drainage slope of at least 1/4 inch per foot away from the house. A slope changes the volume only slightly, but the base, forms and grading are real costs, so use the other costs box for them.
Plan the pour with your supplier, including truck access, time on site and who finishes the surface.
Limits of the Estimate and Related Calculators
This is an estimate. It assumes a flat slab of uniform thickness and uses prices you supply, so it cannot know your local rates, your ground, your design or your contractor's terms. It does not design the slab. Follow local code, ask your supplier and have a qualified professional check structural work. Treat the placeholder prices as examples only.

For the base layer, use the gravel calculator. If you are pricing the job as a contractor, the markup calculator turns costs into a price, and the loan payment calculator shows what financing the project would cost per month.

How much does concreting a driveway cost?
It depends on size, thickness, local concrete prices, the base, reinforcement, finishing, access and labour. The calculator adds each as a line, so you can see where the money goes. Enter the area and thickness, then replace the placeholder prices with quotes from local suppliers and contractors, which is the only reliable way to get a real figure.
How to calculate concrete cost?
Concrete cost is the quantity ordered times the price per unit. Work out cubic yards, add waste, then multiply by the price per cubic yard. For 5.43 yards at $150 that is $814.81. Add a short load fee if the order is below the supplier's minimum, and add other items such as steel and finishing for a total.
How much does a 20x20 ft concrete slab cost?
A 20 × 20 ft slab is 400 square feet. At 4 inches thick it needs 4.94 cubic yards, 5.43 with 10 percent waste. At a placeholder $150 per yard the concrete is $814.81. At 6 inches thick the order rises to 8.15 yards and $1,222.22. Confirm prices locally.
How much does 1m3 of concrete cost?
The price of a cubic metre of ready-mix depends on your region, the strength and the supplier. Enter your quoted price per cubic metre and the calculator multiplies it by the quantity. At a placeholder 200 per cubic metre, a 6 × 5 m slab 10 cm thick, 3.15 m3 with 5 percent waste, costs $630.00 for concrete.
How much concrete is needed calculator?
This calculator shows the quantity first. Enter the length, width and thickness and it gives cubic yards and cubic metres, with waste added. A 20 × 20 ft driveway at 4 inches needs 4.94 cubic yards, and you would order 5.43. The cost lines follow from that quantity.
How to calculate slab cost?
Find the volume of the slab, add waste, multiply by the price per cubic yard, then add the other lines. A slab 24 × 24 ft and 4 inches thick has 7.11 cubic yards, 7.82 with waste, so $1,173.33 for concrete at $150 per yard, before steel, finishing and labour.
How much does 1000 sq ft of concrete cost?
At 4 inches thick and 10 percent waste, 1,000 square feet needs 13.58 cubic yards. Concrete alone is $1,697.53 at $125 per yard, $2,037.04 at $150 and $2,716.05 at $200. Those are example prices. Add reinforcement, finishing and labour for the full cost.
How to calculate concrete use?
Concrete use is the volume you pour. For a slab, multiply length, width and thickness, then convert to cubic yards by dividing cubic feet by 27. A 30 × 30 ft slab at 4 inches uses 11.11 cubic yards. Add 5 to 10 percent so you do not run short on the day of the pour.
How much to pour a 40x60 slab of concrete?
A 40 × 60 ft slab is 2,400 square feet and needs 29.63 cubic yards at 4 inches thick, 32.59 with 10 percent waste. At a placeholder $150 per yard the concrete costs $4,888.89, and $9,088.89 with reinforcement and finishing at $1.75 per sq ft.
What is a concrete price calculator?
A concrete price calculator turns a size into a cost. It works out the volume, adds waste, and multiplies by your price per cubic yard or per bag. This one also lets you add a short load fee, reinforcement, finishing and a flat amount for other costs, so the total covers more than the concrete itself.
How much is a yard of concrete?
There is no single figure, because the price per cubic yard depends on your region, the mix strength, the delivery distance and the supplier, and small orders can carry a short load fee. Ask two or three local ready-mix suppliers for a price per yard, enter it in the calculator, and compare it with the bagged cost.
What is the cost of concrete per square foot?
It is the concrete cost for one square foot at your thickness. A 4 inch slab needs 0.0136 cubic yards per square foot with 10 percent waste, so at $150 per yard it is $2.04. At 6 inches it is $3.06. Steel, finishing and labour are extra.
How much do 11 cubic yards of concrete cost?
Multiply the yards by your price. At $125 per yard, 11 yards cost $1,375.00, at $150 it is $1,650.00 and at $200 it is $2,200.00. Fourteen yards at $150 is $2,100.00. These are placeholder prices. Use your quoted rate, and check for any fees.
Is ready mix cheaper than bags?
Only for very small amounts. At the placeholder prices, bags win below about 0.6 cubic yard, because the short load fee is a flat charge. One cubic yard in 80 lb bags is 45 bags and $315.00, against $250.00 delivered, so delivery is cheaper from there up and far less work. Enter your own prices to compare.
What is a short load fee?
A short load fee is an extra charge when an order is smaller than a supplier's minimum, since a truck still has to make the trip. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association's ordering checklist lists short loads among the extra charges to agree on before you order. Enter the fee and the order size below which it applies.
How thick should a concrete driveway be?
County Materials, a concrete producer, recommends a minimum of 4 inches for a driveway and says thickness affects load capacity more than concrete strength. Heavy vehicles may need a thicker slab. Local code and a professional can confirm what your driveway needs. Thicker slabs cost more because volume rises with thickness.
Do I need reinforcement in a driveway?
County Materials says steel reinforcement is optional but often used to contain cracks, and it should sit in the upper third of the slab. Types include bars, wire mesh and fibres. The calculator lets you add a price per square foot for it, or leave it at zero. Ask a local professional what suits your ground and loads.
How do I use the concrete calculator in metric?
Choose metric, enter lengths in metres and thickness in centimetres, and enter your price per cubic metre and per square metre. A 6 × 5 m driveway 10 cm thick with 5 percent waste is 3.15 cubic metres, which costs $1,170.00 in total with the placeholder prices.
Does a 20x30 slab need the same calculation?
Yes. A 20 × 30 ft slab is 600 square feet. At 4 inches thick it needs 7.41 cubic yards, 8.15 with waste, which is $1,222.22 at $150 per yard. At 5 inches, the order is 10.19 yards and the concrete costs $1,527.78.
Can I use this for a ready mix concrete cost estimate?
Yes. Choose delivered, enter the price per cubic yard from your ready-mix quote, and set the short load fee and limit if your supplier charges one. The result shows the concrete cost, any short load fee, and totals with the other items. Always confirm with the supplier's written quote.
