How the Stone Calculator Formula Works
Multiply the area you're covering by the depth (converted from inches to feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to convert that into cubic yards. Multiply by density and you get tons, the unit most stone yards actually sell and deliver by. Density is the variable to watch with crushed stone specifically: it shifts more by rock type than gravel does, since limestone, granite, and trap rock are all crushed to the same shapes but don't weigh the same per cubic yard.

A Real Worked Example
An 18 by 18 foot patio base is 324 square feet. At 3 inches deep that's 81 cubic feet, or exactly 3 cubic yards. At a typical crushed stone density of 1.4 tons per cubic yard, that's 4.2 tons, costing $189.00 at $45 per ton. Crushed stone commonly runs a bit more per ton than plain gravel, since it takes an extra crushing and screening step to produce a consistent, angular size rather than using material straight off a screen — the $45 figure here reflects that, against gravel's typical $30 to $40 range for the same tonnage.
Like the other bulk-material calculators on this site, this one totals raw material only: add roughly 10 percent for compaction and job-site waste, and confirm your supplier's actual density and delivered rate before ordering, since both can shift the final number more than the depth you chose.
What Else to Know
Natural Stone vs. Crushed (Manufactured) Stone
"Stone" covers two genuinely different products, and this calculator is built for one of them. Crushed stone is quarried rock that's mechanically crushed and screened into a consistent size grade — angular, uniform, and sold by weight per ton, which is exactly what the tons-and-density math above is designed to estimate.
Natural stone, by contrast, is quarried and cut (or left whole) rather than crushed: flagstone slabs, fieldstone, boulders, and veneer pieces that keep their irregular natural shape and are typically sold by the piece, by the pallet, or by square footage of coverage rather than by a density-driven weight calculation, since a stack of irregular flagstone doesn't pack to a predictable tons-per-cubic-yard figure the way angular crushed stone does. The two also differ in more than how they're sold.
Crushed stone's sharp, fractured edges lock together under compaction, which is exactly the property that makes it useful as a structural base or backfill material; natural stone's appeal is aesthetic and architectural — a flagstone patio, a fieldstone retaining wall face, or a boulder used as a focal point — and it typically costs more once installation labor is factored in, since irregular pieces take more time to fit than a graded aggregate that's simply spread and compacted.
If your project is a patio base, driveway, drainage layer, or backfill, you're almost certainly working with crushed stone and this calculator applies directly. If it's a flagstone walkway, a stacked fieldstone wall face, or dry-stacked boulders, price and order by piece or pallet from your stone yard instead — the tonnage math here won't map cleanly onto that kind of purchase.
Crushed Stone Grades Beyond #57 and #8: Base, Drainage, and Riprap

This page's scope is the coarser and more specialized grades that come up on structural stone jobs specifically. #1 stone runs 2 to 4 inches across, the largest common grade, and shows up as a heavy road sub-base or as erosion-control rip-rap along embankments and stream banks, where the sheer mass of the individual stones resists being washed out by moving water. #3 stone, roughly 1/2 to 2 inches, is a common drainage and railroad-ballast grade, sized to let water move through the void space between stones rather than pooling.
Crusher run — sometimes labeled #411 or described as "1 inch minus" — isn't a single-size grade at all but a blend of crushed aggregate down to stone dust, engineered so the fines lock the larger pieces together into a dense, compactable base course rather than a free-draining layer; that's why it's the material under a paver patio or a slab rather than the visible top layer.
