How the Sod Calculator Formula Works
Start with the area of grass you want. A rectangle is length times width, a circle is pi times the diameter squared divided by 4, and an odd shape is the sum of simple sections. Subtract anything that will not get sod, such as the house, a patio or a planting bed. That is the net lawn area.
Sod is cut, carried and trimmed, so you add a waste allowance. The calculator multiplies the net area by one plus the waste percent. Mississippi State University Extension suggests buying about 5 percent more than you measure, so that is the default.
The order is then divided by the area of one piece to give a piece count, rounded up, and by the area of a pallet to give pallets. Cost is whole pallets times the pallet price, or the order area times a price per square foot or square metre, plus delivery. A topsoil line multiplies the net area by the depth you plan to add. All piece sizes, pallet sizes and prices are editable defaults.
sod to order = (lawn area − area to skip) × (1 + waste / 100); pieces = order / area of a piece; pallets = order / pallet area- lawn areasq ft or m2Rectangle, circle, up to three sections, or a known area.

A Real Worked Example
A rectangular lawn is 50 feet by 30 feet, which is 1,500 square feet. With the default 5 percent waste the order is 1,575.0 square feet, or 175.0 square yards.
In 16 × 24 inch slabs that is 591 pieces. On 450 sq ft pallets it is 3.50 pallets, so 4 whole pallets. At a placeholder $300 per pallet the sod is $1,200.00, and with $75 delivery the total is $1,275.00, or $0.850 per square foot. Adding 2 inches of topsoil or compost needs 9.26 cubic yards.
A round lawn 40 ft across with 10 sq ft rolls
A circular lawn 40 feet across has an area of pi times 40 squared divided by 4, which is 1,256.6 square feet. With 5 percent waste the order is 1,319.5 square feet.
Using standard 10 sq ft rolls that is 132 rolls. With 500 sq ft pallets it is 2.639 pallets, so 3 whole pallets at a placeholder $350 each, $1,050.00. Delivery brings the total to $1,125.00.
Three sections minus a house
Section 1 is 40 × 25 ft, section 2 is 20 × 15 ft and section 3 is 10 × 10 ft. The sections add up to 1,400 sq ft. A 400 sq ft house footprint and beds are subtracted, which leaves 1,000 sq ft of lawn.
With 5 percent waste the order is 1,050 sq ft, 394 slabs or 2.33 pallets. That rounds up to 3 pallets, $900.00 at $300 each, and $975.00 with delivery.
A known 4,000 sq ft lawn priced per square foot
You already know the lawn is 4,000 square feet, the seller quotes $0.45 per square foot, and you want 8 percent waste with 3 inches of topsoil. The order is 4,320 sq ft, or 480 square yards.
In 5 sq ft mini rolls that is 864 rolls. Sod is $1,944.00, plus $100 delivery for $2,044.00, which is $0.511 per square foot. The topsoil layer is 37.0 cubic yards.
A small 20 x 30 ft lawn with 10 percent waste
A 20 by 30 foot lawn is 600 sq ft. A curved edge and many cuts justify 10 percent waste, so the order is 660 sq ft.
That is 1.47 pallets, rounded up to 2 whole pallets. At $300 each and $75 delivery the total is $675.00, which is $1.125 per square foot. A small lawn costs more per foot because of the whole-pallet rounding and the flat delivery charge.
Metric: a 12 x 8 m lawn
In metric, a lawn 12 by 8 metres is 96 square metres. With 5 percent waste the order is 100.8 square metres, 1,085 square feet.
With pallets of 42 square metres that is 2.40 pallets, so 3 whole pallets at a placeholder 330 each, $990.00. With 80 for delivery the total is $1,070.00, or $11.15 per square metre. A 5 cm topsoil layer is 4.8 cubic metres.
What Else to Know
How the Sod Calculation Works
The sod calculation turns a lawn size into something you can order. The calculator finds the area of grass you want, subtracts anything that will not get sod, adds a waste allowance, and divides by the size of a piece or a pallet. That is the whole sod calculation formula: order = (area - skipped area) × (1 + waste). For a 50 × 30 ft lawn it is 1,575 sq ft.

This free sod calculator works in square feet or square metres. You can enter a rectangle, a circle, up to three rectangles added together, or an area you already know. Results show square feet, square yards, the number of rolls or slabs, pallets, cost and, if you want it, the topsoil or compost for the bed.

Every format size, the pallet size and every price is an editable default. Sellers differ, so replace the defaults with your own numbers.
How to Measure for Sod
Mississippi State University Extension tells buyers to use a tape measure or a surveying wheel, and to subtract the house and any non-turf landscaping. That is the right order of work. First sketch the lawn. Split it into rectangles, circles and triangles. Measure each length and width in feet, and write the numbers on the sketch.

A rectangle is length times width. A circle is pi times the diameter squared, divided by 4, so a 40 ft circle is 1,257 sq ft. A triangle is base times height divided by 2. If the shape is irregular, use the sum of parts option and enter up to three rectangles. If you used a measuring app, enter its area as a known area. Then put the house, patio, beds and paths in the subtract box.
Measure twice. A lawn that is off by two feet on each side is off by more than you expect once the lengths are multiplied. The shapes table shows each formula with an example.
Rolls, Slabs and Pallets
Sod is sold as slabs, mini rolls, standard rolls and big rolls, and shipped on pallets. A producer lists slabs of 16 × 24 inches, which cover 2.67 sq ft each, mini hand rolls of 40 × 18 inches, which cover 5 sq ft, and large rolls. Virginia Cooperative Extension describes standard rolls of about 10 sq ft and big rolls 42 to 48 inches wide that need equipment.

Pallets hold 450 to 500 square feet in the Mississippi State University Extension guide, and the producer lists 399, 452 or 503 sq ft for slab pallets and up to 700 sq ft for large rolls. Virginia Cooperative Extension gives a range of 450 to 700. Because the range is wide, the pallet size is an input. Check the figure with your seller and change it.

A 450 sq ft pallet is 169 slabs, 90 mini rolls or 45 standard rolls. The piece table shows the counts.
Waste, Cuts and How Much Extra to Order
Every sod job has cuts. Edges, curves, sprinkler heads and trees all mean trimming pieces, and some pieces break in handling. Mississippi State University Extension says it is a good idea to buy approximately 5 percent more sod than you think you will need, so the calculator starts at 5 percent.

Use more when the lawn has many curves, a steep slope or lots of obstacles. On a 1,500 sq ft lawn 5 percent adds 75 sq ft, 10 percent adds 150 sq ft and 15 percent adds 225 sq ft. The waste table shows how the number of slabs and pallets changes. Going from 0 to 10 percent moves a 1,500 sq ft lawn from 3.33 to 3.67 pallets.
If your total falls just over a whole pallet, check whether a smaller waste allowance is enough or whether the seller can split a pallet.
Sod Cost per Pallet and per Square Foot
Sod is priced by the pallet, the square foot or the square yard. The calculator supports pallet pricing, where it rounds up to whole pallets, and area pricing, where it multiplies the order by your rate. Both add a flat delivery charge. The prices on the page, $300 per pallet and $75 delivery, are placeholders so the example works, and they are not quotes.

To compare quotes, convert them to a cost per square foot. A $300 pallet of 450 sq ft is $0.667 per square foot, and the same price on a 500 sq ft pallet is $0.600. The tables show the cost by pallet count and the cost per square foot for several pallet sizes.
Small lawns pay more per foot because of whole-pallet rounding and the delivery charge. Ask each seller about delivery, minimums and whether part pallets are sold.
Lawn Prep and Topsoil Before Laying Sod
Prepare the site before the sod arrives. Mississippi State University Extension says fresh-cut sod has a short shelf life and will not tolerate sitting on a pallet for very long, and it advises finishing site preparation before delivery. It also recommends a soil test, removing debris and working amendments into the top 6 to 10 inches where roots grow, and says 1 to 2 inches of compost on a 3 inch surface layer gives a 4 inch root zone. Virginia Cooperative Extension mentions a 4 to 6 inch depth for soil test amendments.

The calculator turns a planned depth into a volume. A 1,500 sq ft lawn with 2 inches of topsoil or compost needs 9.26 cubic yards. The topsoil table shows volumes per 1,000 sq ft for 1 to 6 inches. Set the depth to 0 if you do not need it.
Topsoil is not added into the sod order, because it goes under the sod, not on top. Starter fertilizer is outside what this tool calculates.
Laying and Watering Sod
Virginia Cooperative Extension says sod is perishable and should be installed within eight hours of harvest. In practice, order for a delivery date when the bed is ready, and lay the pieces the same day. Stagger the ends of adjacent pieces like bricks, and roll the sod after laying so the roots touch the soil.
Water straight away. Mississippi State University Extension advises not to wait to water in summer, and suggests hand watering while you check the moisture under the sod. Keep the soil moist until the roots take hold, then move to deep, infrequent watering.
If you have part of a pallet left, use it to fix bare spots soon, because it dries quickly. If you are short, order a few more pieces from the same grower so the grass type and cut match.
Limits of the Estimate and Related Calculators
This is an estimate for flat or gently sloped ground. A steep slope has more surface than its plan area, and tight curves cost more waste. The tool does not know your sod grower's sizes, pallet coverage or prices, so replace the defaults. It also cannot judge whether sod suits your site, your shade or your region.

If you are comparing sod with seeding, the grass seed calculator gives the seed needed for the same area. For soil, gravel for paths or edging, and stone, the gravel calculator and stone calculator turn area and depth into quantity. For a contractor quote, the markup calculator turns costs into a price.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Sod Calculator
How do I calculate sod?
Find the lawn area in square feet, subtract any area that will not get sod, then add about 5 percent for waste. A 50 × 30 ft lawn is 1,500 sq ft, which becomes 1,575 sq ft with 5 percent waste. Divide that by the area of a piece or a pallet to find how many to buy. The calculator does each step.
How much sod do I need?
It depends on the area of the lawn and the waste you allow. For 1,500 sq ft with 5 percent waste you need 1,575 sq ft, or 175 square yards, which is 3.5 pallets of 450 sq ft. Enter your own measurements and the tool shows the order in square feet, square yards, pieces and pallets.
How to properly measure for sod?
Measure with a tape or a measuring wheel, split the lawn into simple shapes, and write down each length and width. Add the areas, then subtract the house, beds, patios and paths. Mississippi State University Extension suggests buying about 5 percent more than you measure. Measure twice, because small errors on both sides multiply into a large area error.
How do I calculate square footage of a lawn?
For a rectangle multiply length by width. For a circle multiply pi by the diameter squared and divide by 4. For an odd shape split it into rectangles and add them. A 40 ft circle is 1,257 sq ft. Subtract any area that will not be sodded. The sod calculator accepts all of these and a known area.
What is the sod calculation formula?
Sod to order equals (lawn area minus area to skip) times (1 plus waste percent divided by 100). Pieces equal the order divided by the area of one piece, rounded up. For 1,500 sq ft with 5 percent waste, the order is 1,575 sq ft, or 591 slabs of 16 × 24 inches.
How many square feet are in a pallet of sod?
Most pallets hold 450 to 500 square feet, according to Mississippi State University Extension. A turfgrass producer lists slab pallets of 399, 452 or 503 sq ft and large roll pallets of 500, 600 or 700 sq ft. Pallet size varies by grass and region, so enter the figure your seller gives you. The default here is 450 sq ft, and you can change it.
How much does a roll of sod cover?
A standard roll covers about 10 square feet, according to Virginia Cooperative Extension. A mini roll of 40 × 18 inches covers 5 sq ft and a 16 × 24 inch slab covers 2.67 sq ft. For 1,000 sq ft with 5 percent waste you need 105 standard rolls or 394 slabs. Choose the format in the calculator.
How much extra sod should I order?
About 5 percent is a common allowance, and Mississippi State University Extension gives the same figure. Use 8 to 10 percent for curved edges, many cuts or sloped ground. On a 1,500 sq ft lawn, 5 percent adds 75 sq ft and 10 percent adds 150 sq ft. Extra pieces also help if some are damaged in transit.
How do I measure an irregular lawn for sod?
Break the lawn into rectangles, measure each, and add the areas. The calculator takes three sections, so 40 × 25, 20 × 15 and 10 × 10 ft gives 1,400 sq ft. If a house or bed sits inside, enter its area in the subtract box. Here that leaves 1,000 sq ft of lawn.
How do I measure a circular lawn for sod?
Measure the diameter across the middle and use pi times the diameter squared, divided by 4. A circular lawn 40 ft across has 1,257 sq ft. With 5 percent waste the order is 1,319 sq ft. Choose the circle shape in the calculator and enter the diameter.
Is there a free sod calculator in square feet?
Yes. This one is free and works in square feet or square metres. Pick a shape, enter the measurements, choose the piece format and the pallet size, and set the waste. Results show the order in square feet and square yards, the number of pieces and pallets, the cost and an optional topsoil volume.
Does this sod calculator work in Canada?
Yes. Switch to metric, enter lengths in metres, pallet size in square metres and prices per square metre or per pallet. A 12 × 8 m lawn with 5 percent waste needs 100.8 square metres, which is 2.4 pallets of 42 square metres. Check your supplier for the pallet size they use.
How much sod do I need for St. Augustine grass?
The area calculation is the same for every grass. St. Augustine is often sold as slabs on pallets of about 400 to 500 sq ft, so pick the slab format and enter the pallet size your grower states. For 1,500 sq ft with 5 percent waste you need 591 slabs, which is 3.5 pallets of 450 sq ft.
Can I use this for sod from a home improvement store?
Yes, with one check. Retail sod is sold by the pallet or by the square foot, and pallet sizes differ by store and grass. Read the coverage on the label or ask staff, enter it as the pallet size, and enter the posted price. The calculator then gives whole pallets and a total. It does not know what any store stocks.
Is there a sod calculator app?
This page is built to work on a phone, so you can use it on the lawn with no app. For measuring, Mississippi State University Extension notes that several smartphone applications can help measure a lawn. Take the area they give you, enter it as a known area, subtract the house and beds, and add waste.
How many square yards of sod do I need?
Divide square feet by 9. A 1,500 sq ft lawn with 5 percent waste is 1,575 sq ft, which is 175 square yards. Some growers sell by the square yard, and a 450 sq ft pallet is exactly 50 square yards. The calculator shows both units so you can match your quote.
How much topsoil do I need under sod?
Add the depth of topsoil or compost times the lawn area. Mississippi State University Extension suggests working 1 to 2 inches of compost into the top of the soil for a 4 inch root zone. For 1,500 sq ft at 2 inches that is 9.26 cubic yards. Enter the depth you plan to add.
How do I convert square feet to pallets?
Divide the order in square feet by the pallet coverage. For 1,575 sq ft and 450 sq ft per pallet that is 3.50 pallets. If your seller only sells whole pallets, round up to 4. Some sellers split pallets, so ask before you decide.
How much does a pallet of sod weigh?
Virginia Cooperative Extension gives about 20 to 25 pounds per square yard for dry sod and 30 to 40 for wet sod. A 450 sq ft pallet is 50 square yards, so roughly 1,000 to 1,250 lb dry and 1,500 to 2,000 lb wet. Plan the delivery spot and a way to move the pallets.
Should I buy whole pallets of sod?
It depends on the seller. Many sell whole pallets, so the calculator rounds up and prices 4 pallets for 3.50 pallets of need. Others sell by the square foot, which the calculator also supports. If you have a part pallet left over, use it on bare spots, and do not let it sit.
How soon should sod be laid after delivery?
As soon as possible. Virginia Cooperative Extension says sod is perishable and should be installed within eight hours of harvest, and Mississippi State University Extension notes it is not sold with enough soil to last more than a few days. Prepare the bed and arrange water before the pallets arrive, then lay and water at once.
Should I use grass seed or sod?
Sod gives an instant lawn and costs more per square foot. Seed is cheaper but takes longer and needs more care while it grows. If you choose seed, the grass seed calculator gives the amount by area and seeding rate. The area measuring steps on this page apply to both.
